Death of Detail Death of Creation
(Inspired by this thread that lives in my mind)
Imagine living in a world where the governing bodies loved its people.
This love was reflected in the strength and stamina of the buildings, the art on the streets, and the beauty of the manmade structures in the world.
I hereby decree that all new technologies must be vetted via the question of whether they make us more or less social. If they make humans less social, they’re no longer allowed to be created.
I get that we often bond over television shows we’ve watched and books we’ve read, but no matter what I know that creating stories and performances together would be far more pro-social than talking about others doing it.
Social media would probably be crossed off the list, if being “more social” means having more brother- and sister- hood, communities in person, and communication face-to-face.
Recorded music can fuck right off - it’s making us too shy to sing and create in every home according to the organic needs of the moment (I’m listening to music right now)
What would the world be like in your vision of Heaven on Earth?
I recognize that it would be different than mine, but having such a lofty goal for creation probably puts us in the right place for any time we’re talking about planning for the future we want to build.
It would have less throwaway - clothing, architecture, materials, seasonal marketing, relationships, trash, toys
It would have more standing eye to eye and face to face with ourselves and with others
I would be less frightened of rejection in my bids for intimacy
I often feel like all new inventions today are made by a frantic young and inexperienced father who is constantly holding up more toys to assuage a child on the brink of meltdown. He’s trying so hard to stop the baby (all of us are the baby) from knowing we’re heading over a waterfall. Every so often we dip down into depression as the novelty of the latest toy wears off, and the turnover time of this cycle keeps getting shorter and shorter. The highs are high with promise of breaking loose and never feeling bad again, and then it comes right back down again to the innate knowing that something is missing.
Maybe this is just the ramblings of someone who hasn’t had a long conversation or an uninterrupted casual hangout with a friend in far too long. I’m feeling it.
Certainly there are people who are living their version of heaven on Earth right now.
They’ve exercised their powers of creation to amass a life free from existential dread.
Or is this truly a built-in part of being human?
We come here to this density and dimension in order to experience it all and shave our rough edges off on a spiritual journey filled with anguish as well as joy. I do keep wondering if there is a destination - or maybe more accurately I wish there were one that I could aim for and feel happy with achieving.
But the only consistently beautiful thing seems to be found in picking up my own oar and directing where this trip is going, choosing left or right, what adventures are going to be set upon.
By the way, I have a challenge for you in 2024 to meditate for an hour straight in nothing but silence with yourself if you’ve never done it before. Something happens around minutes 40-46 for people where the chaos drops off and you get a new level of comfort within yourself. Even if you never do it again, do it one time.
Download the Free Gingerbread Meditation Kit if you want help getting through the first 5 minutes of meditating, which can often be the hardest. You might open up some shamanic perceptions while you’re there. I’ve also included a free recorded meditation (which is cheating hahaha) around getting to know your own body. Click below.
