LET GO OF HOPE : Advice from a big fucking weirdo ^^.
I have a small collection of pundits disavowing hope, actually. Author Mark Manson retold the tale of Pandora’s Box, in which a curious lass lets free into the world all the bad things but shuts the box just in time to save one thing for us that was good - hope. Except, as Manson put it, and as the weird video clip from one of my favorite Midnight Gospel episodes above says, why should we think hope was good when it kept such company as sorrow, disease, vice, violence, greed, madness, old age, and death?
Perhaps it is a smiling mask worn on just as bleak a form as they.
Hope is the thing that Viktor Frankl’s [concentration] camp-mates held onto who died first, after being bludgeoned by not being freed by this holiday, that holiday, the new year, or whatever idea they pinned their hope onto.
Their hearts couldn’t take it. It’s too much to be excited and to pin whether life is worth living onto at least most externalities only to have it come down in crashing waves, battering you a little lower every time hope fails to pan out. This all went into Frankl’s book Man’s Search for Meaning.
But what of faith? - I wondered.
What of belief?
