Where are we going together?
The ultimate goal of humanity is to go places with other people.
Whether that’s to Mars, or another galaxy, any big-picture idea about the future of mankind involves a bunch of people going there. Nobody’s vision is of one man or woman, alone, heading past the Big Dipper. And if they are, it’s so that other humans can go there - together - later.
Our job on this planet is to connect and interconnect with other people and through our shared efforts bring us all to a better place.
You can have a shitty job that is not your passion, a bad past, and a hundred and fifty thousand dollars of debt, but if you have connections to the people around you you can also have a happy and fulfilling life where those stresses are shared and the effects are mitigated. Even moreso if the people are part of digging you out of your problems.
The horrible things that stress you out become lighter when they are in service of moving forward. You could put yourself through anything if you feel it’s tied to something greater in the future.
But many of us have zero idea where we are heading, much less with other people. Even the people we love can become roommates or are operating on their own instead of a shared vision.
The first step back from that disconnect is to listen long enough to feel a connection to the people around us.
It is futile to ask a question without the capacity to hear an honest response.
Listening is the one aspect of communication that is entirely within your control.
If you’re waiting to speak, interrupting often, or keeping tabs on your arguments, you may not know yet how to make a person feel heard.
